When a missionary goes into uncharted territory, they do not prop up their video screens and the powerpoint and start singing Tommy Walker songs. (That would be a great video. End with the Metrosexual worship leader falling on his face with a back full of poison darts and a child of the tribe coming across a Bible propping up the projector…)

I know of three people, specifically, that will not go to a church that has over 100 people in it because they have anxiety about large crowds. BUT they love to sit around with a few friends, play cards, and talk deep things about life. One of them, I know for certain, has a deep respect, love, and appreciation for Jesus. What if it were culturally acceptable for them to NOT “go” to church but were encouraged to draw near to God while they were playing poker?

I just started reading Organic Church, by Neil Cole (for the second time, never got through 1st time) and I’m intrigued at what church Jesus might build in Evansville from this sort of book. From what I gather so far, it’s a lot like what would happen if somebody took Perspectives and then applied it to their local neighborhood.

Holy Roller has a lot of great stories of drug addicts, prostitutes, and thieves being miraculously healed in South Dallas, Texas. A man describes his calling in chapter 1: “Wherever there is a lot of depravity, sickness, and disease, there is a great harvest. I noticed there were a lot of churches in South Dallas, but there was no harvest.”

There are great tales of people’s lives being changed and being freed from the corrupt greed and adultery present in the Black Pentecostal movement. Lots of times where the Holy Spirit worked outside of somebody’s theological box, be it Petecostals or Lutherans or Catholics. There is a section in the middle that gets a little too autobiographical and tells of the authors sexual identity confusion, but as I am currently only halfway through the book I’m trusting that the story will get back to the South Dallas revival pretty soon. (I hope so, that was a much stronger, more compelling section of the book.)

This book is not a safe mall read. I started the book sitting at the mall eating Subway and at one point I was too disgusted to eat and at another I was crying like a baby. Holding back a hard core Holy and Reverent sob at the grace of God.

It’s a good book, and if you’re near me I’ll loan it in a week or so after I finish it. If not, check out the first chapter at B&N then click this link to buy it from amazon

For some reason, I am having great difficulty inserting a picture here, so all you get is a text link.

“Yet, because Moses gave you circumcision (though actually it did not come from Moses, but from the patriarchs), you circumcise a child on the Sabbath. Now if a child can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses may not be broken, why are you angry with me for healing the whole man on the Sabbath?”

I was just thinking about this and how God cared so much more about people being in a relationship with Him and having faith in Him than doing all of this stuff just right. To the Pharisees, all of life hinged on making sure you did every single thing just right and if someone did something wrong, finding out who did it and what exactly they did wrong.

God does not want us to be monitors and recorders of who wrongs us either. The Pharisees had a complicated flow-chart life of answering every moral question they could have. On what day should we circumcise a boy? What if that day is a sabbath? What if that day is a feast day? They could just click through the flowchart and think they knew what God wanted. Fast-forward that a couple thousand years, and they forget who that flowchart came from, and who it points to.

Saturday, my next door neighbor had a fire in his kitchen. Joe (my neighbor) severely burned his hands and had to be taken to Louisville for a few days to save his fingers. He is still there. He called me and asked me to take care of his dog and house and bring his stuff to the hospital, namely his laptop so he could skype his wife in Taiwan. On my way home I thought about Joe, and I thought about calling a guy at church that helped us move down here and get into living in the inner city.

At that moment I realized that for the past few years, maybe even a decade, I have viewed everyone I’ve worked with or been neighbors with as someone to be targeted, served, witnessed to, and converted. I haven’t been very open about that, but it has come out some as I talk about them, or think about them, or pray for them. That was my whole life with every person I came in contact with in Asia, and my whole point of moving to where I’ve moved.

But as I was driving home, I was praying for Joe’s fingers, and he just became Joe. He is a computer guy by trade, and if he lost his fingers it would be a big big big deal. I didn’t care about finding a way to witness to him or wonder if I should have slipped a bible into his computer bag or prayed by his bedside or something, I just cared about him being healed.

I feel like in my flowchart lifestyle, I’ve disconnected myself some from people God loves, and just gone off of a self-created mandate to do christian things for people. I think God is starting to free me from my christianese and showing me how to just follow Jesus. He’s working into me a real love for my co-workers and neighbors that doesn’t keep track of a law and how they are breaking it, but instead is beginning to sincerely love them and care about them as normal people and not field goals. I can only imagine how much more the life of Jesus will shine out to real people instead of goals, but I’m not going to concern myself with that, else I just go right back where I was. I’ll focus on Jesus, and His glorious ways, and love my neighbors at the same time.

I talked with a guy yesterday morning for a while about Judas being hand-picked by Jesus. I am overwhelmed at the true meaning of sovereignty shown by Jesus. One of THE TWELVE is “a devil” and He doesn’t flee or try to take him out! He actually shows him a LOT of mercy.

“He called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out evil spirits and to heal every disease and sickness.
These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (who is called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.”
(Matt 10:1-4 NIV)

Jesus gave JUDAS authority to drive out evil spirits and to heal every disease and sickness!

What if we followed Jesus as His disciples, ones that imitate Him, and followed Him down this path?! He chooses men to follow Him, knowing full well that one of them will betray Him with a betrayal that results in His death. I can just imagine if Peter knew about it in advance.
“No Lord, he must not come with us. You’ll die!” says Peter
“Simon, Simon,” Jesus replies, “don’t you know that it is written

“”

So often it seems like we make decisions on the basis of our safety. Especially down here in our neighborhood. Too many times I think I make a decision on who to serve based on whether I can trust them or not, or whether they will be faithful and repay me for what I did for them, either in respect or kindness to my family or openness to Jesus.

But Jesus shows mercy completely free. He gave spiritual gifts to Judas so that the news of The Kingdom would go out, even though His messenger would betray Him to death! I think of giving a beggar some money out of fear of him coming back or guilt that he sees me in my house with all of my riches. Jesus would give to that beggar much more than my little $5 giftcard to McDonald’s, and know full well that the next day that beggar would be shouting for His execution.

The grace of God blows me away once again. I want that fearless, not-withholding grace power in my life!

It’s been quite a week in our neighborhood.

Tuesday night we had about 50 Jr. High kids come down and help out on our street. They picked up tons of sticks and bundled them all up and raked a lot of grass and leaves into bags. It was good to walk down the street and see them all working so hard, and then talk to my neighbors some that had come out to see what was going on.

Last night we had a prayer night and some friends from church and our whole family went to two nearby schools and prayed for the surrounding neighborhoods. I was especially glad to take the kids along so they could participate and witness what we’re doing.

Tonight seemed normal enough. We called it our “night off” since we didn’t have any events planned. I was out in the back yard getting the grill going when one of my neighbors came out to his back yard and we both met in the alley and started talking. He said that the house behind us and over one has been empty for 6 years, and was a crack house before that.

I think in a few days another crew from church will come and clean it up. I told him I would like a corner of it for a garden. He said he’s already done that! He grew corn and tomatoes in somebody’s abandoned yard!

He went back into his house and there I was trying to cook my burgers medium well and figure out where I’m going to put a fence between my yard and the alley. I heard a bike approach and it startled me.

I told the person on the bike it startled me and they just laughed. They asked me what I was doing. I commented about the fence and our wall, etc. THINKING that I was talking to a teenage boy.

Well I was wrong.

It was a woman.

After my comments about the fence, I repeated her question back, “What are you doing?” (looking back, I realize that I speak with a different level of respect to a woman than to a teenage boy)

She said, “I’m just needing some food. I’m homeless-I sleep down by the river-and pregnant and I have diabetes and I just need $5 to get something to eat.”

That is a tough call. In the past I haven’t been able to mix relief w/ the gospel. At the same time I’ve seen that relief w/o the gospel just helps wicked men in their wicked deeds. But here was a beggar, humiliated I could tell, begging.

I gave her two McDonald’s gift cards and she said she smoked too. “I’m not going to help you with that, that’ll kill you. Of course, that McDonald’s might too.” I said. I know it’s hard to be thankful when you’re desperate. She also darted off about as fast as she could after I gave it to her, looking embarrassed.

It’s really embarrassing being poor. It’s humiliating to ask and it’s humiliating to take a handout. I know about all kinds of long-term plans to help people out of poverty, but I also know what it’s like to be hungry and not have enough money to buy the food you need.

I think I would rather give $500 away to 100 con men tricking me into giving them drug money, than say no to a single mom trying to figure out how to get dinner.

So last night it was a cool night and I thought it would be good to open some windows and let some of the cool night air fill up our house. I went around and, since it was well after dark, opened each blind, pulled the window open a bit, and then closed the mini-blinds back again. Two of the windows in our living room open out to the front porch. I stepped over my daughter that was sitting by the window and opened the mini-blinds. There, running away, was a man with a camcorder in his hands. I only saw his silhouette because there was a white pickup truck parked in front of my house. It was running and the headlights were on. I closed the blinds real quick and stood there, kind of shocked, kind of worried, while I realized what had just happened.

In case you are far away or are reading this months from now, some context. This past weekend Hurricane Ike hit a front and sent major major winds into our town. I put up a gallery of tree damage on my smugmug (http://dansullivan.smugmug.com click events, then Sept. something windstorm) All of my neighbors were without power for at least 24 hours, and the park was pitch black. We, however, had all kinds of power.

So I stood there for a minute. Was he videoing the trees that came down…or how dark the park was??? the media had been around all day…no, he was running away!

So anyway, who knows what he was doing, but he certainly destroyed a lot of our peace. All day today we’ve been wondering if he was sizing up our belongings so he could come back another day or if he was filming our daughter as she sat on the floor watching Madagascar or what.

Needless to say, he wasn’t doing anything fruitful.

So tonight I was cleaning up from my evening housework and I started thinking about how Jesus talked about theives coming in the night. If you don’t like theives, it wasn’t very reassuring. If you don’t like Jesus, the thing He said wasn’t very reassuring either.

Matthew 24:42-44

Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.

Whenever Jesus returns, be it before some trib or after or after all of the people disappear and Kirk Cameron videos pop up everywhere, all of that is arguable, this is clear, whenever Jesus returns, it will be a surprise.

It will be just like when you open your blinds and see that there was a thief there, that came in w/o you knowing it, but now he’s there.

Got a gun? No time to go get it. I have a friend 2 blocks over that walked into her house, thought that someone had been there and saw something sitting on the back porch. She walked back through the house, realized that YES, someone HAD been there, and went back to the porch and the something was gone. They were there at that moment and she didn’t realize it. The thing on the porch? The family shotgun.

Got an alarm system? It only works if you turn it on. Car alarms have become so common now that no-one responds to such an annoyance.

When a thief comes, you don’t know it until it’s too late. That is how it will be when Jesus returns. Never mind when it will be or how many nuclear wars we’ll have to if the Temple will be built.

Whenever he comes, it will be a surprise to us all.

It is so wild that Jesus compares himself to something like this. A thief is evil, hidden, tricky! Aha, but that’s where Jesus gets you.

Tricky, yes, because it’s too late.

Hidden, yes, because you didn’t see Him coming.

But evil, no. A thief is evil because he takes away something you want.

This Divine Thief won’t take what you want. If you try to save your life, you’ll lose it, He said. He is coming to take whoever would give themselves up for Him, and there is nothing evil about being joined with perfect perfection for eternity.
