Preaching for The Kingdom or the kingdom

When you preach, do not teach interesting things. Do not preach great information to help people’s lives be better/happier/fuller/richer/stable or anything!

PREACH as if you are speaking of LIFE and DEATH. Preach as if your message MUST be heard and lived out or they’ll die. We have had enough good speaches to improve our quality of LIFE. We must now PREACH A COMING KINGDOM, Not a convenient one now.

I turned on the radio…

I turned on the radio long enough to hear an advertisement for a tape series on how to live a Biblically based world view, and I thought wow! Is that the goal now? And, turned off my radio.

Isn’t that what the Pharisees that crucified Jesus were working on?!

Two Quotes Worth Repeating

These both appear earlier in my blog from a talk at the Well, but I just came across them on a search and thought they were so good it was worth repeating. They are from

Considering what I represent to that city, it would be wrong for me to focus on the darkness. I don’t ever what to be impressed with the devil’s work. I come as a house of God.
–from p. 140 When Heaven Invades Earth

I don’t care what the devil plans to do. the Great Commission puts me onthe offensive. I’ve got the ball. And if I carry the ball effectively, his plans won’t matter.
Picture a football team in a huddle on the playing field. The coach sends in the play, and the quarterback communicates with his offensive teammates. On the sidelines is the opposing team’s offense. Their quarterback linesup out of bounds with his offensive team, but they don’t have the game ball, nor are they on the actual playing field. Now imagine the real offense getting distracted by the intimidating actions of the other offense. Caught up in their antics, they quarterback runs off the field in a panic, informing the coach tha tthey better put the defense on the field because the other team is about to use a surprise play. - p153

A brief commentary on my current bike rack.

I did not buy you a $300 bike so you could strap a big bucket of kitty litter to the back of it.

Disturbing Church

During the most important part of the church service, the background music played is an anthem to their country. Pictures of their military are shown, some even with guns in hand, while the congregation meditates on the Eucharist-the body and blood of Jesus who said “blessed are the peacemakers.” At the end, the men’s choir who is usually brought in to sing the most stirring and powerful songs about the saving power of the Gospel puts words to the same song played earlier, singing about God’s favor for the country and the men that fought in bloody wars to keep it ‘free’. The final moments of the song were punctuated with video of huge guns being shot off and cheers from the congregation.

This is not a tale from some state-controlled church in a third world military dictatorship. This is from my church in Indiana, and to all of my non-american friends I say I am so sorry.

Receiving Foreign Aid…

In thinking about Burma and China rejecting foreign aid for their disasters, I just wonder what New Orleans would have thought if a lot of Iranians would have shown up to help them after hurricane Catrina.

On the Monks, Burma, and the Nations

On the 20080412 Mars Hill Podcast, Rob Bell was talking about burmese monks and democracy, and some of it is a good thing to say and his point is good, but all I can remember is those monks walking around saying “give money to Buddha, give money to Buddha” and the worlds largest Buddhist temple covered in gold while orphan kids starve to death one block away.

I think it is one evil killing another evil. Why DO the nations rage?

Jesus is the only hope for the world. You can have your democracy, just give me Jesus.

I say millions of words…

I say millions of words everyday.
