I think you are correct. I fear our institutional practice int he church is different however. I think we separate the two verses and expect those not in authority to "accept correction with grace" while "fully supporting" all decisions and actions of "the leadership." It doesn't look like that to me in the passage. I think the verses are joined, not separated. peace

I don't think authority has anything to do with it, honestly. A wise man loves correction, and better a rebuke from a friend than a kiss from an enemy and all of that. I think in sincerity and humility, without slander but in seeking everyone's best and closest relationship with God, rebuke and encouragement is no problem. I think the problem is when we heap too much pride on it and we rebuke with our own authority, or we take a rebuke as being 'against' our authority.
My wife is really good at being peaceable and considerate, because she hates conflict. This sometimes causes bad things to go on too long. I tend to be the opposite. I am really good at pointing out faults and stirring things up like I like conflict, which sometimes keeps good things from getting better. :)

Very well said. I would love to hear more thoughts on those final verses. How does it play out when those needing the rebuke/correction in love are the ones in authority? peace
