Closing on My House at the Twilight Zone Mortgage Company

So there I was, going to close on my house. The realtors from both sides were there, the loan guy, and the closing guy. It was kind of refreshing to sign a bunch of documents in a language that I could read. After two years of getting docs shoved in my face in the 9th most corrupt country in the entire world with the command “Signature!” I was a little gun-shy going into the closing.

I threw fear to the wind and signed everything they put in front of me with hapless abandon!

After signing enough documents that they stacked up a full inch, we were done and they handed me the keys to my new house. At last, I was a homeowner.

“ok,” says the loan guy “Now my assistant will just make copies of all of these for you and we’ll be done. Now who wants to see some fish?”

[insert record scratch sound here]

Yes, you read right. he said,

“NOW    WHO     WANTS     TO     SEE    SOME     FISH?”

And with that, everyone in the room (except me) jumped up with excitement and big smiles.

I wouldn’t have been weirder if he would have opened up a jar of pickles for all of us to share.

I went along as he ushered us down the hallway, out of the signing room, and to an unmarked door at the end of the room. He opened the door for all of us and we walked in and there was another hallway and then a room full of tropical aquariums! The walls were lined with tanks of exotic fish, the center of the room was a big open tank full of coral and clams and snails.
A man was standing in the middle of the room and my loan guy said to him, “This is Steve and Judy (names changed) and they want to switch from freshwater to saltwater and this is Dan Sullivan and he needs a saltwater.”
Steve rescued me by starting to talk to the fish salesman while I stood in a little shock. A tropical aquarium business in the mortgage company?
Then two people came in another door with a younger high-school kid. He began to talk genus and species with these other customers and I wondered if there was a sign outside that door.
I checked and there was. There in the backyard, the sign said “Employees Only”
“Ok, so this is really weird.” I said to Judy. I figured the next thing was that they would block the doors and commence to steal our kidneys. After about another minute, I had enough. I didn’t leave work early to close on a house I’ve been waiting for for months to look at fish.
I headed for the door and got the classic handshake at the door that I learned at the Shoe Carnival. If the customer is leaving empty handed, shake their hand at the door and thank them for coming to turn them back toward the store, you may be able to turn them back in from there.
In the signing room, it was no surprise that my documents were ready and after a few moments, I got out of there.

All of this led me to think about first-fruits. All over the scriptures, God asks that we give Him the first part, and He will make all the rest Holy. I’m wondering about the first-fruits of my homeownership. If the first 10 minutes were so bizarre, what will the next 10 years hold?

Google News Offers Their Own Commentary on the Election

I love to watch and see how Google News puts pictures with articles that don’t quite fit. This one caught my eye the other day, especially knowing that a lot of Google staff are for Ron Paul.

Plates I’m Spinning

Right now, I’m reading “Forgotten Ways” by Alan Hirsch, I just started “Organic Church” by Neil Cole, I’m reading “The Horse and His Boy” by C.S. Lewis with my kids, Jeremiah for my Wednesday Donut Bible Study, and selections from John for some discipleship.
I think the first two will fall by the wayside when I close on my house tomorrow.
It’s time to quit reading and start doing.

One shot of the eclipse

2008 Lunar EclipseHere is one of the pictures of the eclipse that I posted on my smugmug gallery. It was more of an experiment, but some of them look kind of cool.

I’d like a 9 piece nugget, I mean 10, I mean 9

This picture was just too confusing to pass up.

Levites from Libya

Is. 66:19 ¶ “I will set a sign among them, and I will send some of those who survive to the nations—to Tarshish, to the Libyans and Lydians (famous as archers), to Tubal and Greece, and to the distant islands that have not heard of my fame or seen my glory. They will proclaim my glory among the nations.
Is. 66:20 And they will bring all your brothers, from all the nations, to my holy mountain in Jerusalem as an offering to the LORD—on horses, in chariots and wagons, and on mules and camels,” says the LORD. “They will bring them, as the Israelites bring their grain offerings, to the temple of the LORD in ceremonially clean vessels.
Is. 66:21 And I will select some of them also to be priests and Levites,” says the LORD.

I read this and I am just amazed.

I get goosebumps and tears in my eyes.

Libyans, Lydians, and Greeks, and other people from the nations WILL BE SELECTED TO BE PRIESTS AND LEVITES.

In the 8th Century B.C., God tells the world that He is going to bust out of Abraham’s ancestry and out of the tribe of Levi and call priests from the nations. That blows me away. I don’t know why. I already know and experience GOD living IN me, so why am I so blown away that we are made into Levites.

I guess because that would have been such a crazy thing for Isaiah to say to the Jews then. That would be like saying I’m going to turn these druggies on the street into the elders and preachers of megachurches. awesome.

Love without Labels

“Keep on loving each other as brothers. Do not forget to entertain strangers,”(Heb 13:1-2 NIV)

This passage says continue the philadelphia, but don’t neglect the philoxenia.

Philadelphia is the love of the brothers, those from the same family.

Philoxenia is the love of the strangers, those that are outsiders.

I think it’s interesting that the NIV and the KJV both leave out a big section of the original greek here that says basically:

“love strangers and outsiders, unless they take away your jobs, disgust you, or don’t fit in with your way of life.”

You know why the NIV and KJV leave that out? It’s a conspiracy. Because it’s not in there. We are to love our enemies and strangers just like they are family.

I remember one time I had a friend that had to travel by land across several former Soviet countries to get his Visa renewed. His wife and daughter lived in the country we were in, and he had to go across about 12 countries to go to his native land and renew his visa.

Upon leaving country #1 (I’ll say the first country) he was detained for no apparent reason and spent about 24 hours in a shack on the border. He had no food, and he wondered what was going to happen to him. The next day, when they realized he could pay them no bribe, they sent him onward. We didn’t hear from him for days and days and we wondered what ever happened to him.

Then one day I went to the market, and went around the corner, and there he was! Do you know what joy I had in seeing him?! I was OVER joyed. I gave him a big hug and even though neither of us shared a common language he motioned and talked and said he had just gotten back the day before.

I had brotherly love for him. I feared for his life and for his wife and daughter in this strange land. I told my wife, later, what if whenever we saw someone, we greeted them like we greeted Sly today? For one, people would probably think we were pretty weird.

But then, what if we greeted all visitors, even STRANGErs, with a joyful reception?

Love your brothers, but don’t neglect loving the strange.

Welcome to Tumblr

I am now putting the more inane things that happen over on Tumblr.

This is the place for stuff that I come across that I just want to share or save. It may not be Bible study goodies, and some of it may not be clear at all, but it’s the stuff that I think “man, I should post that.”

Thoughts on John 1:35-39

John 1:35  The next day John was there again with two of his disciples.
John 1:36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!”
John 1:37  When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus.
John 1:38 Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, “What do you want?” They said, “Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are you staying?”
John 1:39  “Come,” he replied, “and you will see.”  So they went and saw where he was staying, and spent that day with him. It was about the tenth hour.

I was just thinking about this as I went to bed last night and this morning. It is so great that Jesus was free to invite these guys to his house and spend the day with him. He was available. He didn’t put them off or say, I need to finish this up… or I’m busy.

He also didn’t tell them “I live at 851 Riverside.” He said, “Come and see.” He walked with them and took them to where they were going, instead of just telling them. It sound a little passive, but I just read on google books that the Greek grammar implies that He is saying, “If you come with me, and I want you to, I’ll show you.”

<20080208>
So what if it’s true? What if God WANTS to spend time with me? What if God WANTS me to come with Him to where he is going, and then sit around and waste a lot of time being together (for lack of a better phrase).

That makes me think of dating. How when you are new in the relationship, you have to do things- go to a movie, play putt putt, the typical, silly date activities. But then when you get closer, and I guess this is summed up perfect in marriage, you can be together and enjoy DOING NOTHING.

The availability of God and the desire to keep me around blows me away. Yesterday Cindy was talking about some friends of ours that invited us over for the super bowl and are now inviting us along with them to a 2/14 banquet. She said, “I can’t believe that they want to be around us. Of all their other friends, why do they like us?” That is so funny. Cindy can’t believe that someone would desire to be around our family. As she said that all I could think about was this passage. Jesus wanted to be with these guys- a lot.

So I’ve scoured and looked all over because I’m about to make a blanket statement and I didn’t want to be off. If I’m off, tell me. John the Baptist says “the Lamb of God”

Which Lamb? There are lambs all over the OT, and it’s a common sacrifice. So I looked at all of the sacrifices, every one of the regular sacrifices is a lamb, or a ram, or a bull, etc etc. Ok, what about the daily sacrifice? Every time it’s mentioned there are two, one in the morning and one in the evening, so for a while I was wondering how Jesus was THE Lamb (even though there were two) and where does that fit?

Then I found it. <prepare for blanket statement> The only place where there is a lamb sacrificed, and it’s not with drink offerings, and it’s not with grain offerings, is at the PASSOVER. If you’re poor, get with another family and share a lamb. If you’re rich, get one big lamb. It has to be a lamb. Because someday, God’s Son is going to show up, and He’s going to show you all what a real Passover is all about.

Moths are Slowly Eating their Souls

Is. 51:7 “Hear me, you who know what is right, you people who have my law in your hearts: Do not fear the reproach of men or be terrified by their insults.
Is. 51:8 For the moth will eat them up like a garment; the worm will devour them like wool. But my righteousness will last forever, my salvation through all generations.”

There are two main themes (I am thinking about today) through Isaiah 49-53

God is my avenger and He holds my payment in His hand. There are numerous places in here where he talks about moths eating things up. My wife pulled a shirt out of the closet just 2 days ago that had moth holes in it. The wild and amazing thing about moth holes is that most of the time you never see the moths.

David had the nickname “mothbane” when we lived in Asia, because any time he saw a moth he would kill it. Even if he was eating dinner. Even if we told him not to. The thing is, it wasn’t the moths that we could see that were tearing up our clothes. The moths we could see were safely locked OUT of our closets. It’s the moths IN our closets that were destroying our clothes.

I read all this stuff about evil men, and I can’t help but think how unseen their destruction is. It’s not obvious that God is fighting for the oppressed. It’s not blatant to the world, or media especially, that moths are eating holes through the insulting, evil powers of this age.

Moth and Rust. They both destroy slowly, from the inside out, and both destroy because of poor maintenance. If people would give attention to their insides, to the hidden areas inside the locked closets of their souls, there would be fewer holes, and less hidden destruction.
